On Top of the World at Masi Wine Bar Cortina: Dolomites, Italy
Masi Wine Bar Cortina. It's a different world up there. At an altitude of 1,778 meters high on the terrace of Col Drusciè, enveloped by the Dolomites, one of the most fascinating mountain ranges in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this particular wine bar is a little paradise on top of the world. It can be reached by the Tofana - Freccia nel Cielo cable car from Cortina d'Ampezzo in a matter of 8 minutes and the trip itself gives way to an evocative perspective of Monte Cristallo and the Ampezzan valley below.
A collaboration between Tofana Srl, the company managing the cable car and Masi Agricola, a winery from Verona famous in the world for its Amarone, the wine bar opened in in the middle of winter in December 2018 in Cortina d'Ampezzo. It was preceded by the opening of Masi Wine Bar Zurich in Switzerland. The modern wooden structure with large picture windows is not dressed in the usual traditional South Tyrolean manner, rather, it stands distinctly in its new age design. The refined wine bar has an informal ambience with tables set outside, in the open terrace with large umbrellas overlooking the mountains, and indoors, with the picture windows allowing the picturesque view to be admired.
Like the structure, the dishes prepared by Chef Luca Ursella are revisited traditional cuisine with a contemporary touch which meet the excellent wines of Masi. There is no shortage of proposals from the chef in the seasonal menu. Appetizers are about €17 for platters of local ham, cheese and mushrooms (when in season) while the first courses of pasta and risotto are at €16 and a bowl of creamy soup at €11. Main courses range between €18 to €25, salads at around €17 and desserts between €6 to €8. The Deep Fried Porcini Mushrooms served with salad and fresh berries is a simple platter that reveals the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Whereas the Potato Gnocchi Filled with Roe Deer, Wild Herb Cream, Sour Butter, Pecorino Cheese and Bitter Cocoa Crumble is a stimulating dish.
The wine list has an ample selection of about 50 labels that includes old vintages. For big winelovers, not to be missed is the "Masi a Tutto Tondo", an initiative that can be reserved which offers a trip in discovering the different nuances of the wines of the Masi Cellars which is led by their sommelier.
