A Day of Discovery of the Irpinian Truffles & Wine at Tenuta Cavalier Pepe
A weekend of Irpinian truffles and wine full immersion has passed with a participation of outstanding number of enthusiasts at Tenuta Cavalier Pepe. Notably a colder zone than the rest of Campania region, Irpinia on Saturday morning was enriched with a full sun and clear blue skies amplifying the exciting experience of truffle hunting with the hunters and their dogs.
Milena Pepe of Tenuta Cavalier Pepe came up with the grand idea of pairing a selection of her wines with the truffles of the area. In the world of truffles and wine, there's a whole lot of sensations that surround you in smell, taste, touch, sound and sight and diving into this world for a day is a very interesting journey of discovery. The wine estate was recently awarded as one of the World’s Best Vineyards 2022 along with other prestigious Italian estates like Antinori, Ferrari Trento, Donnafugata, Marchesi di Barolo and Gaja.
The activity starts late in the morning outside the winery for a welcome drink with one of their sparkling wines, the Oro Rosè, a rosè sparkling wine made with indigenous red grape varieties that went through the Charmat method paired with bruschetta topped with Caciocavallo cheese Scorzone truffle. With the weather permitting, a short walk through a part of the centuries-old vineyards follows while walking with the hunters and their dogs sniffing the ground for truffles. A guided truffle and wine tasting with the finger food prepared by the chef of La Veduta Restaurant follows at the event room of the restaurant where Franco de Luca and Tommaso Luongo of Associazione Italiana Sommelier conduct the steps in understanding and appreciating the pairing of the wines and truffles. Afterwards, a four-course lunch follows at the restaurant where each dish prepared by the chef is dedicated to truffles and paired with a particular wine for every dish to complete a unique sensory journey at the table.
