Limito of Carpineti: The Largest Vineyard Labyrinth in the World Opens Near Rome

Carpineti has proudly unveiled Limito, the world's largest vineyard labyrinth, situated within the idyllic Parco dell’Antoniana, part of the wine estate in Cori. This exceptional project not only sets a new record but also enhances an area steeped in history and natural beauty, ready for rediscovery just a few kilometers from Rome, in the province of Latina, Lazio. The labyrinth features ancient grape varieties native to the region: Bellone, Nero Buono, and Abbuoto.

Limito, the inspiration of Paolo Carpineti, has officially opened its doors to visitors to explore its intricate designs and pathways. Located at 500 meters above sea level on a plateau surrounded by wild nature, woods, the sky, and the distant sea, the labyrinth lies between the municipalities of Bassiano, Sezze, and Sermoneta.

The Genesis of Limito

The journey of Limito began in 2019 when Paolo Carpineti, Creative Director of Carpineti, inspired by his lifelong experience among vineyards, envisioned a more inclusive and welcoming vineyard. Unlike the traditional straight rows of vines that often feel restrictive, Paolo wanted a space that embraced visitors and allowed them to wander freely. "Generally a row is made up of point A and point B, there is no way to cross it as you wish. This thing has always given me a sense of lack of welcome, I think a vineyard it should be a hospitable place," says Paolo, reflecting his desire to create a vineyard rich in emotional meanings, inviting those who wish to visit.

Paolo’s vision was brought to life by landscape architect Fernando Bernardi, who meticulously crafted the labyrinth. The result is an elaborate land art piece designed to embrace and welcome those who wander within it. "Get lost to find yourself," Paolo hopes every visitor can experience this journey, advancing with decisive yet incredulous steps, guided by the sounds of nature and their own instincts. The Parco dell’Antoniana, with its wild nature, good wine, and beautiful surroundings, offers a perfect setting for such an experience.

The realization of Limito was a complex process involving four years of dedication. The labyrinth, 80 meters in diameter, features vines of Bellone, Nero Buono, and Abbuoto. It has four entrances and two different paths, providing various ways to explore. Two parking spaces surrounded by eight cypresses serve as reference points, while two spirals add dynamism to the design, allowing visitors to enter from one side and exit from the other. "An important and unique challenge with the aim of giving further value to the territory and the landscape of the Lepini mountains," says Fernando Bernardi, underlining the goal of shining the spotlight on an area so valuable and rich in beauty.

The Agronomic Aspect of Limito

The labyrinth vineyards primarily feature Bellone and Nero Buono, grape varieties rediscovered by the company after being nearly forgotten. Additionally, the company has revived Abbuoto, an ancient grape that was once enjoyed by the ancient Romans and part of the renowned Cecubo wine blend praised by Horace and Pliny. These three varieties were chosen to represent the region's historical grapes and to strengthen the concept of terroir. This ambitious project aims to elevate these grapes using an organic approach, categorizing them based on the microclimate and soil of each estate. This includes the well-established and appreciated classic method, with the goal of producing authentic crus that uniquely express the terroir.

The unique design of the labyrinth supports a specific experimental purpose. Its waves and shadows create an environment conducive to the optimal maturation of different grapes, enhancing vine and fruit management. The design also incorporates the color changes of the grapes and their leaves with the onset of cold weather, transforming the labyrinth into a vivid showcase of autumnal orange tones.

The Carpineti Experience

Limito is now a part of the Carpineti Experience, which offers a range of activities to explore this beautiful, yet underappreciated, region. "In a world where chaos reigns, getting lost in nature helps you find yourself," says Isabella Carpineti, Project Manager of Carpineti Experience. Visitors can explore the area on foot, horseback, bike, or car, each route leading to the labyrinth of vines. After emerging from the labyrinth, guests can enjoy a toast with Carpineti wines and local delicacies, further enriching their experience.

Limito embodies the Carpineti family’s mission to transform their estates into open-air museums, where productivity meets artistic beauty. A notable addition to the plateau is the large swing called Otium (Latin for leisure), crafted by local artist Alessio Pistilli from Cori. This contemporary art installation that stands over 7 meters tall provides a dual experience: a nostalgic connection to childhood and a frame for the surrounding landscape, inviting visitors to physically engage with the art. I recommend listening to some soothing instrumental music through your earphones and fully immersing yourself in the surroundings. This enhances your connection with the environment, bringing it to a deeper level.

Additionally, Bodema is partnering with Defender, the 4x4 range of Land Rover on the Limito project of Carpineti Experience. Carpineti's dedication to sustainability perfectly aligns with Bodema's values and strategies. In 2021, Bodema installed a 75kW photovoltaic system, making it nearly energy self-sufficient. Additionally, they implemented a rainwater recovery system and continue to introduce initiatives to reduce their environmental impact. The Carpineti project, with its strong commitment to environmental sustainability, perfectly aligns with these values and strategies. This collaboration underscores the importance of integrating technological innovation with environmental responsibility, illustrating how the automotive industry can move towards more sustainable solutions.
