Osteria Fratelli Mori in Rome Hosts the First Roman Cuisine Street Art Mural
To celebrate twenty years of activity, Osteria Fratelli Mori has commissioned the artist Emans to create "Magna e Mori", the first mural dedicated to Roman cuisine within a restaurant.
On June 5, 2024, Osteria Fratelli Mori marks an important milestone: twenty years since Ambrogio Mori, with the support of his wife Giuliana and sons Alessandro and Francesco, ventured into the restaurant business. Over two decades, the Mori family has established a strong identity, making their osteria one of the most renowned Roman taverns in Rome.
The Magna e Mori Mural
To honor their Roman roots, Giuliana, Alessandro, and Francesco Mori enlisted Emanuele Serra Nicoletti, known as Emans, a famous illustration and mural artist, to create the first mural dedicated to Roman cuisine. "For this occasion," the Mori brothers explained, "we wanted a special project. Given our neighborhood's rich tradition of urban art, we decided to commission a mural celebrating Roman cuisine on the wall at the entrance to our restaurant."
Located in the Ostiense district, a hotspot for tourists drawn by its international murals, Osteria Fratelli Mori now features the vibrant "Magna e Mori" mural. The 2m x 3m mural by Emans depicts two figures savoring quintessential Roman dishes: spaghetti alla carbonara, Roman gnocchi, rosetta bread, pecorino cheese, artichoke, lamb, saltimbocca, maritozzo with cream, and a glass of wine, all set against the backdrop of the Gazometro, a symbol of the Ostiense district.
"I am extremely happy to have had this opportunity," Emans says. "Rome has an exceptional culinary tradition. It's wonderful to find a place that is rooted in tradition and simultaneously offers a fusion of classic tavern culture with contemporary elements." Emans, known for his ability to capture modern society's detail and complexity, adds, "In this mural, I wanted to convey the sense of friendship and brotherhood that comes with sharing a meal, enriched by the abundance of flavors and dishes that define Roman culture."
A Retrospective: 2004-2024
Reflecting on their journey, Alessandro and Francesco say, "This is a starting point for further growth. Over the years, we have improved, and our team has grown alongside us. We are proud to see our staff developing professionally and embarking on new career paths within established companies."
The story began in 2004 when Ambrogio, a passionate cook, decided to realize his long-held dream by purchasing the restaurant in Via dei Conciatori, 10. The Mori family's preference for typical Roman cuisine was evident from the start, with traditional dishes taking center stage. Over the years, they have focused on family hospitality, Roman tradition, and enhancing their culinary offerings. They shifted away from pizzeria fare, emphasizing kitchen quality, ingredient sourcing, and wine selection.
"Initially, our menu featured labels that didn't match our dishes' craftsmanship," explain Francesco and Alessandro, both sommeliers. "So, we sought out small producers who work sustainably. Today, we have around 150 labels, mainly organic and natural wines."
About the Artist: Emans
Born and raised in Rome, Emanuele, known as Emans91, has been passionate about art since childhood. His travels, especially to South America, inspired him to study graphic design in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2021, Emans returned to Rome, dedicating himself to illustration and muralism. Through his whimsical and vibrant characters, Emans paints unique portraits of modern society, capturing detail and complexity.
A self-described cosmopolitan, Emans has leveraged the internet to bring his work to a global audience. His portfolio includes collaborations with prestigious clients and international brands, such as a cover for the Johns Hopkins Magazine and an illustration for the Washington Post's food section.
With "Magna e Mori," Emans celebrates Roman culinary tradition, infusing it with contemporary vibrancy and a sense of communal joy, making it a fitting tribute for Osteria Fratelli Mori's twentieth anniversary.
