Manvi Wines: A Tuscan Dream Realized in the Heart of Montepulciano

Manvi Wines, an organic estate vineyard located in the southern sector of Montepulciano’s DOCG region in Tuscany, Italy, is the vision of Sudha and Puru Manvi. The couple, originally from Hyderabad, traded their banking careers for a life dedicated to winemaking in Tuscany. Since 2015, Manvi has been producing a select range of organic wines that reflect both the heritage of Montepulciano and their own passion for sustainable farming.

With vineyards spanning approximately 8 hectares, Manvi Wines specializes in varieties such as Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malvasia. The winery produces around 30,000 bottles each year, including Vino Rosso, Vino Nobile, and the traditional Vin Santo. Each bottle reflects the estate’s commitment to organic practices and preserving the Tuscan terroir.

The Story of the Manvi Family

Sudha and Puru Manvi left behind successful banking careers to pursue a new life in Tuscany. Drawn to winemaking as both a lifestyle change and a passion, they acquired the Giannotti estate in 2015, an organic vineyard previously owned by Antonio Giannotti. Renaming the estate after their hometown in India, Manvi, the couple was committed to maintaining the organic certification established by Giannotti in 2003. For Puru, turning fifty marked a shift toward a healthier and more fulfilling path, and today, both he and Sudha embrace the hard work of running a family-owned winery in Montepulciano.

Operating as a boutique winery, the Manvis are involved in every step of the process, from grape cultivation to winemaking. Their philosophy revolves around producing high-quality, organic wines that reflect the land. The dedication and hands-on approach have earned Manvi Wines a reputation for integrity and quality, emphasizing a deep respect for nature and traditional winemaking methods.

The Vineyards and Winery

Manvi’s vineyards cover 8 hectares in two distinct locations, each with diverse soil compositions that contribute to the complexity of their wines. Nestled between Val di Chiana and Montepulciano, the estate cultivates mainly Prugnolo Gentile (a Sangiovese clone), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and white grapes such as Malvasia and Trebbiano for their Vin Santo. With sustainable practices at the core of their operations, Manvi Wines avoids chemical fertilizers and pesticides, relying instead on minimal machinery and extensive manual labor to protect the health of the vines.

The winery itself is located directly beside the vineyards, minimizing grape transport. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel containers, and the wines are aged in large oak barrels ranging from 20 to 35 hectoliters, with smaller barriques reserved for select wines like the Riserva and Super Tuscans. The underground facility, situated beneath the estate’s pool, naturally regulates temperature, reducing energy use and carbon footprint. Every aspect of production, from fermentation to bottling, is conducted on-site, ensuring that only finished bottles leave the estate. This careful approach allows Manvi Wines to truly embody the authentic flavors and traditions of Tuscany, with wines refined in the bottle for six months to over two years before release.

Exploring Manvi Wines: A Taste of Tuscany

Myra Rosso di Montepulciano 2022
Myra is crafted from Sangiovese with a hint of Merlot, cultivated in sandy soils. The wine is aged for 12 months in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh fruit character, followed by an additional six months in the bottle for added complexity. On the nose, Myra reveals lively aromas of wild berries, cherry, and a hint of violet, with delicate floral undertones. The palate is fruit-forward and well-balanced, offering medium tannins and a pleasant sapidity, leading to a long finish with a touch of bitterness. Ideal for pairing with pasta, grilled chicken, and medium-aged cheeses, Myra is best enjoyed slightly chilled at 15-16°C, making it a perfect choice for summer.

Arya - Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
Arya is crafted from 100% Sangiovese, grown in sandy soils, and aged for 24 months in medium-toasted, 33-hectoliter oak barrels, followed by 12 months in the bottle. This full-bodied red reveals an intricate bouquet of violets, ripe plum, and layered notes of fresh-to-dried flowers, pepper, and warm spices, showcasing a refined expression of Tuscan terroir. On the palate, Arya delivers vibrant acidity and a notable sapidity, enriched with flavors of dark fruits and subtle hints of tea leaves. The wine’s lightly toasted nose, combined with the influence of its sandy soil origins, adds depth and complexity. This elegant wine pairs beautifully with robust dishes like pork, beef, wild boar, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino stagionato, making it an ideal companion for hearty meals.

Ojas Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2019
Ojas is a Riserva made exclusively in exceptional vintages, from top-quality Sangiovese grapes cultivated in clayey soils in Notola. Aged for 30 months in 33-hectoliter French oak barrels, followed by an additional 18 months in the bottle, this wine presents a bold character with intense aromas of sour cherry, wild berries, and spices. On the palate, Ojas is muscular and robust, with powdery tannins and a finish marked by good acidity that balances the rich, black fruit flavors. Its clay-originated sapidity differs from the other two wines crafted from sandy soils, providing a unique structure. This refined wine pairs well with game, roasted meats, grilled lamb, and aged or blue cheeses, enhancing its powerful and balanced profile.
